Justin Rose gives Luke Donald food for thought
Justin Rose turned professional in 1998. He first burst onto the seen as Rose finished tied fourth at 1998 The Open. 2007 was a special year for Rose as he won his first event on the European Tour. Rose played in his first Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club in 2008.
Rose played in his second Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club. The Englishman played a significant role in the miracle at medinah as he defeated Phil Mickelson in the singles. Rose made it a theme of beating Mickelson as The Englishman won his first major at Merion Golf Club. Rose ended a 17 year drought to become the first English winner at the U.S. Open since Nick Faldo in 1996.
Rose played in both 2014 and 2016 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and Hazeltine National. Golf made the long awaited return to the Olympics at Rio in 2016. Rose won the gold medal at 2016 Olympics as he beat Henrik Stenson by two strokes in a 72 hole event. Rose was extremely delighted as he became the first man to win a gold medal for golf at the Olympics in 112 years at Rio.
2017 was another good year for Rose as he lost in a play-off to Sergio Garcia at The Masters. 2018 was Rose’s best year on tour which started with a tied second finish at The Open in Carnoustie. He went on to win 2018 FedEx Cup in the Tour Championship at East Lake. Rose was successful in Europe winning the 2018 Ryder Cup as the Englishman finished the year as world number one.
He started 2019 in great form as Rose won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The win at Torrey Pines was Rose’s 10th victory on the PGA Tour. Pebble Beach was the venue for 2019 U.S. Open and this suited Rose as he finished tied third. He has struggled since then due to multiple injuries and loss of form.
2019/2020 PGA Tour season was a struggle for Rose as he missed the cut seven times. The game continued to be poor throughout 2020/2021 season as he missed the cut four times and withdrew from one tournament. His fitness was a big issue as he withdrew from another tournament throughout 2021/2022 PGA Tour season. Rose showed that their was signs of the game recovering as he shot a final round of 60 to finish tied fourth at 2022 RBC Canadian Open.
He got a timely confidence boost as Rose finished in the top 10 at Houston Open before Christmas. Rose was ranked 71st in world golf rankings at the end of January 2023. It has been a huge drop off in a couple of years and Rose is too good to be ranked 71st in the world. Rose finished in the top 20 of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. He found a bit of form in time for the unique event AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Rose opened up with two rounds of 69 at Pebble Beach and Monterey Peninsula. Rose had a incredible 65 on a weather delayed day three which included a hole in one at Spyglass Hills. It was interesting to see if a five-day tournament would affect Rose with been 42 years old. His final round kick started as Rose had a eagle on par five sixth. He took a one shot lead into day five were they finished their back nine.
Rose made a couple of incredible putts as he shot a final round of 66. Rose won his first event at Pebble Beach since 2019. Rose became the first Englishman to win the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Rose will be looking to get back inside the top fifty before the cut off for The Masters. There is a lot of young players coming through that will possibly make the European Ryder Cup team but you still need experience which includes Rose. Luke Donald would love if he could call on the experience of Rose in Rome later in the year.
